Solidarity projects in Senegal
Senegal’s education level improves thanks to rechargeable solar lamps in schools.
To achieve the goal of universal access to energy by 2030 and significantly increase the share of renewable energy in the national energy mix, as Senegal has committed to do in the framework of the Energy Efficiency Plan, the country relies both on government programs and private initiatives. (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/fr/energy/).
Thus, the National Agency for Renewable Energy (ANER) has conducted in 2021 a project to install recharging racks with 40 solar lamps at school level. The project has improved the level of education in the school by allowing students to do their homework in the evening in good conditions, thus contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal n°4 aiming at ensuring access to quality education for all.
Other similar projects promoting the Lagazel collective charging station were born from collaborations between non-governmental structures and local authorities. This is the case of the project in the school of Diaglé (Fatick region in Senegal) implemented by the Regional Development Agency of Fatick and the NGO Initiative Développement within the framework of a cooperation project with the New Aquitaine region, or the project led by the NGO Le Partenariat, which is deploying collective charging stations in schools in the Saint-Louis region in northern Senegal, thanks to funding from associations such as Schola Africa or companies such as La Compagnie fruitière as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program.
In Senegalese schools, we can also mention the commitment of the NGO Energy Assistance to install collective charging stations in a school in the Kaolack region thanks to funding from the ENGIE group and its Foundation, which has helped increase the success rate in end-of-cycle exams, or Electriciens sans frontières, which has enabled 50 schoolchildren in Lompoul-sur-mer to benefit from solar lighting.
Generally, awareness sessions are organized in the schools to ensure the proper use of the equipment by the beneficiaries, as well as a good understanding of the challenges of solar energy, and follow-up visits several months after the installation ensure the sustainability of the project. This was the case for the project led by the association Bagoudibou in two schools in the region of Thies.
